Reelfoot Lake is located in the northwest corner of Tennessee, and is one of the greatest hunting and fishing preserves in the nation. The lake encompasses 25,000 acres (15,000 of which are water and wetlands) and harbors almost every kind of shore and wading bird, as well as the golden and American bald eagles. Reelfoot Lake is located along the Mississippi Flyway and is the winter host to thousands of ducks and geese as well as other migratory birds. The lake has an average winter population of approximately 125,000 geese and 215,000 ducks, the most common being the Canadian goose and the mallard. Duck and goose hunting are major wintertime activities around the lake. The Reelfoot Lake area provides both field and open water and pot-hole hunting. Reelfoot Lake was partially formed by a series of violent earthquakes during the winter of 1811-12. Known as the New Madrid Earthquakes, these may have some of the most powerful earthquakes to have hit the continental United States. Despite its violent birth, the true tradition of Reelfoot Lake is relaxing atmosphere. The lake seems to have a mystical, tranquil touch in an already too busy modern world.
